Lesson 6 What is Decimals?
Welcome friends!! Now so far we learnt about Fractions, we will now find out what is Decimals? Have you come across words like 5.3 miles, 2300.1 miles, 43.8 lb, 16.3 oz etc? These numbers represent Decimal numbers. Let us learn more about Decimals now.
Objectives: In this lesson we will learn what is Decimal Fraction? What is Vulgar Fraction? How do you represent Decimal Fractions?
Numbers 1, 3, 5 .7, 9. 36, 234 etc are all Integers.
7/12, 3/ 5, 4/7, 11/15 etc. are all called ‘Vulgar Fractions’.
The fractions having the denominators 10, 100, 1000 …….. can be expressed in another method called Decimal Fractions.
Let us consider a fraction 3/10 which is a ‘Vulgar Fraction’. This can be expressed as 0.3 as Decimal Fraction.
Consider mixed Fraction 5 12/100, the equivalent Decimal Fraction for this is 5.12
Consider fraction 7 7 /1000 the equivalent Decimal Fraction for this is 7.0007
.Place Value: The Place and the Place Value of each digit in the Decimal Fraction 79.425 is given below:
